De Quervain’s syndrome
If you have :
- pain during thumb use
- a swelling on the radial side of the wrist
you may have De Quervain's tenosynovitis.
It is a painful condition that affects tendons where they run through a tunnel on the thumb side the wrist. It can appear after repetitive movements of the wrist (unusual use of the thumb, new habits, etc.) and typically to young mothers holding their baby (wrist flexion and thumb extension).
The tissue surrounding the tendons get thicker (painful lump) preventing free tendons slide.
In early stages a splint and anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed to rest the thumb and the wrist. Hand therapy can learn how to reduce stress on the wrist. Steroids injection are usually very effective.
It other approaches have not worked, surgery is performed (tendons release) under local anesthesia.
