Hand and wrist surgery : what is it ?

Hand and wrist surgery is a highly specialized surgical discipline, with one of the longest training periods, requiring specific skills in orthopedics, plastic surgery and peripheral nerves. Dr Mirsada Bejic specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of all traumatic, degenerative or congenital lesions affecting the hand, wrist and peripheral nerves.

The hand is an essential tool for all daily activities, and hand surgery can restore functionality and improve patients’ quality of life. Specialist treatment is a guarantee of quality, and enables a rapid return to professional and sporting activities after surgery.

Whether for carpal tunnel syndrome, wrist fracture or pain of the thumb, each procedure is tailored to the patient’s specific needs. This approach minimizes post-operative pain and reduces recovery time.

At Leman Hand Clinic, Dr. Mirsada Bejic is recognized for her expertise and commitment to medical excellence. She works closely with occupational therapist Elise Marenghi to ensure comprehensive, coordinated care, from the initial consultation through to post-operative rehabilitation.

Surgeries performed at the Leman Hand Clinic

Dr. Mirsada Bejic, a specialist in hand, wrist and peripheral nerve surgery, holds a Swiss diploma in hand surgery and a European diploma in hand surgery (FESSH). At the Leman Hand Clinic, she offers consultations for hand pathologies whose complexity requires the expertise of a board-certified, experienced surgeon.

Thumb arthroplasty

Prosthetic thumb arthroplasty is surgery to replace the damaged joint at the base of the thumb with a prosthesis. This procedure is often necessary for patients suffering from severe osteoarthritis of the thumb, also known as rhizarthrosis. This condition causes severe pain and loss of mobility in the thumb, making it difficult to perform all daily activities. Thanks to surgery, patients can regain better hand function and, above all, eliminate their pain.

Carpal tunnel surgery

Neurolysis of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel (or carpal tunnel) is an operation designed to free the compressed nerve at the wrist. The condition usually causes tingling, pain and numbness in the first 3 fingers, and in advanced stages, numbness and weakness. The procedure is performed in our operating room at the Leman Hand Clinic under local anaesthetic using a minimally invasive technique to reduce recovery time and improve functional results. Manual activities are resumed early and progressively, without immobilization.

Surgery for contracture finger

Trigger finger (or flexor tenosynovitis) is characterized by painful locking of the finger in flexion or extension. This inflammatory condition is treated at the Leman Hand Clinic, under local anaesthetic, with a 1cm incision at the base of the affected finger. It quickly eliminates pain and blockages in the finger, while enabling immediate resumption of manual activities.

Dupuytren’s surgery

Dupuytren’s disease is a mostly familial pathology, characterized by nodules in the palm and/or cords in the fingers, leading to finger contracture and limited extension. Dupuytren’s surgery (or aponeurectomy) consists in excising the contracted fibrous tissue, restoring finger extension and improving hand function.

Wrist osteosynthesis

In the event of a displaced fracture of the wrist bones, surgery is required to reduce the wrist to its anatomical position and fix the bones with a titanium plate, also known as wrist osteosynthesis. Wrist fracture surgery requires treatment by an expert in hand surgery, due to its complexity. Dr. Mirsada Bejic uses advanced techniques to ensure optimal healing and prevent complications. Each treatment is tailored to the patient’s individual needs to ensure a rapid recovery.

Ulnar nerve surgery

Ulnar nerve neurolysis (decompression) at the wrist or elbow involves releasing this compressed nerve to relieve tingling in the ring and little fingers, numbness in the fingers and weakness in the hand. Dr. Mirsada Bejic uses a microsurgical technique to decompress the nerve and restore its function, offering patients a significant improvement in their symptoms.
