Custom splints

Custom splints are an integral part of the treatment of elbow, wrist, thumb and hand pathologies. Specifically designed to adapt to each patient’s unique morphology, these orthoses provide support and immobilization to promote rapid and effective healing. Whether recovering from a fractured wrist or relieving tendonitis in the thumb, custom-made splints are an effective, personalized treatment solution.

What is a custom splint ?

A custom splint is an orthosis designed specifically for a patient, according to the unique needs of their pathology and the shape of their limb. Unlike standard splints available in pharmacies, custom-made orthoses are made from thermoformable materials, enabling perfect adaptation to the patient’s morphology. These splints are used in particular after hand and wrist surgery, or to treat chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis of the thumb or tendonitis.

Custom-made splints can be designed for different parts of the hand and wrist. These devices are made to meet specific needs, whether to stabilize a joint, correct posture or protect a vulnerable area after an injury.

Indications for hand and wrist splints

Custom-made splints are recommended for a variety of hand and wrist conditions, such as after surgery, to stabilize a wrist fracture or relieve chronic pain.

They are also effective in the first-line treatment of conditions such as tendonitis or osteoarthritis, providing targeted, comfortable immobilization.

Thermoformed wrist and thumb orthoses are designed to support weakened joints or damaged ligaments. For example, a custom-made wrist orthosis or thermoformed thumb splint can be used to aid recovery by keeping bone and joint structures in optimal position.

These devices help reduce pain and facilitate healing, while preventing possible complications.

Types of custom-made splints

There are several types of custom splint, depending on the patient’s needs.

Plaster

Plaster remains a traditional choice for immobilization, for example after a wrist fracture. However, plaster casts have certain disadvantages: they are heavy, uncomfortable and do not allow adequate ventilation of the skin, which can lead to irritation.

Orthesis

Thermoformed orthoses are made from specific plastic materials that soften under heat and adapt precisely to the shape of the patient’s hand or wrist. These braces offer great comfort, as they are lightweight, breathable and can be adjusted as swelling or pain progresses.

Advantages of custom-made splints

Custom-made splints offer a number of advantages :

  • Effective immobilization : they keep bones and joints in the ideal position for healing, particularly after a wrist fracture or thumb sprain.
  • Personalized comfort : thanks to thermoformable materials, they adapt perfectly to the limb’s morphology, reducing pressure points and ensuring optimal comfort for prolonged wear.
  • Accelerated healing : they stabilize the affected area, accelerate healing and reduce unwanted movement for rapid recovery.
  • Prevent complications : they protect joints and soft tissues

Care and use of splints

To ensure the effectiveness, comfort and durability of custom-made splints, we recommend checking the fit of the splint over time, especially if swelling decreases or if any pressure points bother you.
