Tennis elbow

If you have :

- pain at the bony prominence at the outer aspect of the elbow (known as lateral epicondyle)

you may have tennis elbow.

It is a tendinous disease usually related to repetitive movements of the wrist. The lateral epicondylitis (known as tennis elbow) or medial (golfer’s elbow) are due to an overuse of the wrist tendons. It can cause inflammation or irritation at the elbow (tendons attach).

Epicondylitis tends to become chronic.

Therapeutic approaches are:

  • in the early stages: rest, activity modification, immobilization, stretching exercises and anti-inflammatory drugs
  • in the later stages, steroid or plasma injection into the painful region provide short-term pain relief

In severe and long-standing cases, surgery can be discussed (after 9-12 months of medical treatment). It has to be known that only 10% of patients need a surgical treatment.
